"The APWU — American Postal Workers Union — is a national organization of employees of the United States Postal Service (USPS) dedicated to advancing the interests of its Members and their families.
Representing 330,000 postal employees in every state and territory in the United States, the APWU is the largest Union of postal workers in the world. It is the exclusive collective bargaining agent for USPS employees in the Clerk, Motor Vehicle Service, and Maintenance Crafts.
In addition, the APWU represents employees in Support Services, workers in Material Distribution Centers, Information Service Centers, Mail Equipment Shops, and Operating Services Facilities.
"Although it is true that only about 20 percent of American workers are in Unions, that 20 percent sets the standards across the board in salaries, benefits and working conditions. If you are making a decent salary in a non-Union company, you owe that to the Unions. One thing that corporations do not do is give out money out of the goodness of their hearts." — Molly Ivins, Political Columnist
The APWU was founded on July 1, 1971, the result of a merger of five postal Unions. The two largest Unions, the United Federation of Postal Clerks and the National Postal Union, represented those who "worked the windows" at post offices, and who sorted and processed mail behind the scenes. These two were the largest of the Unions involved in the merger; both traced their origins to the National Federation of Postal Clerks, which was created in Chicago in 1906." The Bangor Maine Area Local #536 was established in 1919 as a Local under the support of the National Federation of Postal Employees. In February 1980, we gained a charter under the American Postal Workers Union, AFL-CIO. Our Local has approximately 200+ Members and represents the Clerk and Maintenance Crafts employed by the United States Postal Service. We are the second largest Local of the APWU in the State of Maine.
