1. The secretary will determine that the member whose child or grandchild has applied for the scholarship is a member (or was, if deceased) in good standing with the B.A.L #536 by looking at the upper left hand corner of the envelope.
2. AN impartial member will be designated by the executive board to open the envelopes and remove all identifying features and mark them in order (A, B, C, etc.).
3. All executive board Members will be given these essays, and each will vote for first, second, etc. in the following manner:
a. First Place= Number of Entries
b. Second Place= Number of Entries Minus One
c. Third Place= Number of Entries Minus Two
d. Last Place= One Vote
4. The impartial member will then tally the votes and announce the winner and the alternate with the first and second most points.
5. The secretary will then notify both the winner and alternate in writing of the scholarship committees' results according to number eleven of the "Rules and Regulations for the B.A.L. #536 Scholarship Guidelines".
6. The treasurer will then allocate the award money accordingly.

Rules and Guidelines
1. Applicants must be the son, daughter, stepchild, or legally adopted child of an active or deceased member of the BANGOR AREA Local #536 (B.A.L. #536).
2. The student's parent(s) must be a member in good standing of the B.A.L. #536, APWU for preceding application or must have been a member immediately preceding death.
3. Application for a scholarship must be an official application form supplied by the B.A.L #536, scholarship program. Completed forms must be received by the Secretary of the B.A.L. #536 in the official self addressed stamped envelope (S.A.S.E ) provided in the scholarship package no later than: [please contact the Secretary at sec536@att.net or (207) 941-2089 for current deadlines]
4. The scholarship committee will consist of the executive board and will solely responsible for the interpretation of these rules.
5. Applicants must be a senior in high school planning to graduate: [please contact the Secretary at sec536@att.net or (207) 941-2089 for current graduation deadlines] in order to be eligible.
6. Applicants must write and essay, of not less than 300 words or more than 500 words, on the following topic: "How do Unions promote Democracy?"
7. All essays become the property of the B.A.L. #536, A.P.W.U., AFL-CIO and may be published in the office journal and/or website of this organization.
8. Scholarship recipients must attend an accredited college/university of his/her choice.
9. The B.A.L. #536 will award one - four (4) year scholarship. It will be divided into equal installments of $250.00 per year, for a total of $1000.00 for a four (4) year program. For those attending an accredited two (2) year college will receive $250.00 each year. If they decide to continue their education, they will receive the remaining two (2) $250.00 installments. If not, the last two (2) year installments will go to the alternate winner.
10. The scholarship committee will select one (1) winner and one (1) alternate. The alternate will be selected in case the winner fail to attend school for four (4) years, and the alternate will receive the unpaid portion of the scholarship.
11. After the college/university has notified the treasurer of the B.A.L. #536 that the student has registered and is attending classes. [The treasurer will send the check to the winning student. The treasurer may be contacted at treas536@att.net or (207) 941-2089]
12. Recipients must be enrolled at least ½ time per semester to receive award.
