MAINE STATE APWU SCHOLARSHIP

Rules and Guidelines

1. Applicants must be the son, daughter, stepchild, or legally adopted child of an active or deceased member of the MAINE STATE APWU through Local affiliation or as a Member-At-Large, (MAL).

2. The student's parent(s) must be a member in good standing of the Maine State APWU for at least one year immediately preceding application or must have been a member for one year immediately preceding death.

3. Application for a scholarship must be an official application form from the Maine State APWU Scholarship Program. (Current copies acceptable) Completed forms must be received by the Secretary/Treasurer of the Maine State APWU no later than: Please visit the Maine State website at www.apwumaine.org for current deadlines

4. The Scholarship Committee will consist of the State Executive Board and/or others as may be necessary.

5. Applicants must be a senior attending high school to be eligible.

6. Applicants must take the Scholastic Aptitude Test. Secondary school records and SAT scores must be submitted with the applications by the required deadline.

7. Applicants must write and essay, of not less than 250 words or more than 300 words, on the following topic: "Labor Unions in the State of Maine"

8. All essays become the property of the APWU of Maine, AFL-CIO and may be published in the office journal and/or website of this organization.

9. Scholarship recipients must attend an accredited college/university of his/her choice.

10. The Maine State APWU will award one 4-year scholarship. It will be divided into equal installments of $375.00 per year, for a total of $1500.00 for a 4-year program.

11. The amount of the scholarship will be deposited with the college/university attended by the recipient once the Maine State APWU is notified that the student has registered and is attending classes. The award will be sent to the business office to be applied towards the cost of tuition.

12. The Scholarship Committee will select one winner and one alternate. The alternate will be selected should the winner fail to attend school the year the award is offered.

13. The Union has the right to cancel this scholarship program at any time it deems appropriate and without prior notice. However, once a scholarship offering has been publicized, the Union agrees to follow through for that particular year.

14. Recipients must be enrolled at least ½ time per semester to receive award.
